Unplugging To Recharge

Recently my family and I traveled to one of our favorite places in Idaho called Priest Lake. Surrounded by big beautiful pine trees, mountains and an 18-mile long freshwater lake, and one of the best parts were that the cabin we stay in doesn’t have internet and cell service…..yippee!! Being off the grid provided a fertile setting for grounding and recharging. In the beginning, Our patterns of picking up our devices to check-in were almost compulsive and, we were challenged as a part of the unplugging process but, man how liberating it was to be free. As you may have guessed in exchange for unplugging there was the gift of letting go. Letting go of the need to respond to daily life. Permitting ourselves to have great conversations, laughter, really being present and soaking in and connecting with the natural beauty that surrounded us.

If our minds and time are preoccupied with one thing it’s only natural to be unavailable and in the space of something else. The average person spends over four hours a day on their device. That's right, most people spend a full quarter of their waking hours on their mobile device. Let’s face it, our devices are amazing for so many things and are likely to not be going anywhere anytime soon. But, if you’re feeling stressed, anxious, and just generally ungrounded then you may want to consider unplugging to recharge. Most of the clients I see are learning to manage stress and general anxiety which usually stems from the habits and patterns that have been created. To change a habit or pattern requires that we create new ones. Creating new habits starts with making choices and we have to want to. If you’re finding yourself anxious, spacey or lightheaded, stuck, sleeping, even having trouble walking or balancing then we Amy want to give awareness to how plugged in we are and try some grounding activities for recharging.

What is grounding? An electrical device is “grounded” when it is connected to the ground in a way that allows excess energy to leave the system. We humans also need grounding but, are a bit more complicated. We need to be grounded for the natural exchange between our complex energy system and the earth. Much like trees, we need to send our energetic roots into the earth so they hold us steady. Grounding serves to keep us steady and to essentially recharge us so there is a balance. Just like your cell phone and the computer has to be docked and put to sleep for optimal functioning.

Here are a few simple tips for grounding daily or as needed, remember everything is about making choices and creating new habits toward our healthiest self.

Tips

  1. At the bottom of the foot is an energy vortex that pulls energy in from the earth. Our feet can attune us to the natural rhythms of the earth. Sometimes the connection between feet and earth is blocked, especially in a world that is becoming more and more concrete. When you can, go barefoot especially in the grass/dirt. Rubber flip flops and carpeting and wood floors are not conductors of energy, so go back to nature when you can!

  2. Regulate the time spent on your device. Those same devices are electrical and can influence your natural electrical patterns. Not to mention the time spent unplugging can free up time for other healthier activities.

  3. Take a bath or shower, water is cleansing in more than one way. Water itself is pure liquid energy and being in or even around it can reboot.

  4. Quiet yourself if even for a few moments. Maybe going to or coming home from work, take a few moments to breathe in fresh energy-containing oxygen, while placing your hand on your heart bringing your focus to something you have gratitude for today.

  5. Laugh, laugh, and more laughter, even if pretending to laugh makes you start laughing just at yourself and this also generate the flow of those feel-good hormones.

  6. Tapping on K-27 meridian, find your collarbone notches and drop down into the little pockets just below. Massage or tapping apply a fair amount of pressure this “kidney meridian” point goes through all the other meridians and stimulating it on a daily bases or more often as needed can serve to get energy moving through all the meridians.

  7. Do something fun, what brings you joy?? Go do it!

  8. Exercise, walk, yoga, aerobic exercise, get the flow going. I love adding a nature component it especially recharges me.

  9. Stuck on a worrisome thought, tapping on your third eye, “Governing Meridian” this serves as a powerful charge to all meridians. On the area between your two physical eyes, taping while focusing on a word that is the polar opposite from your worrisome thought and repeat silently or out loud 10-12 times and repeat until you feel a shift. Words carry frequency and this will help you to calibrate to a different frequency.

  10. Hug someone or hug a tree! Hugs stimulate the feel-good hormones and hugging a tree can be a fun way to ground with natures energy.

There ya have it, many ways to ground and recharge and you may have some time tested ones of your own as the list could truly go on and on. It’s different for all of us one size doesn’t fit all. Explore, try on for size a few grounding tools for at least three days and see if creating some simple, easy new tools can’t bring some vitality and flow into your world!
