Your Words Are Your Direction

      The Energy of Your Words

Affirmation as Intention, Vibration & Declaration

Imagine you want a gallon of milk, so you get in your car and drive to the hardware store. You walk through the doors, look around and think, Where's the milk? You can search every aisle. You can stay there all day. You can want that milk with every part of you, but you're simply in the wrong store. You have to change direction. I always say “go to the right store, for what it is you want."

I think about affirmations in much the same way.

Sometimes we say we want peace, abundance, confidence, love, healing, connection or change, but our thoughts and inner dialogue are continually taking us in the opposite direction.

I'm not enough.

Nothing ever works out for me.

I can't do this.

I'm always overwhelmed.

I'll never get there.

It's a little like repeatedly driving to the hardware store and wondering why we can't find the milk.

Affirmation helps us change direction.

From a more esoteric perspective, I think of it as changing our vibrational direction, consciously choosing the thoughts, words and energy that point us toward what we want to experience and embody. An affirmation becomes our internal GPS.

It doesn't mean we magically arrive at our destination simply because we said the words. We still have to drive the car.

But first, we have to point ourselves in the right direction.

Speak From “I AM”

There is a very different energy between saying:

I hope I become more peaceful.

and declaring:

I AM peaceful.

Or:

Someday I will trust myself.

versus:

I trust myself. I listen to my inner knowing.

When I work with affirmations, I like to speak them in the present tense as a declaration that what I am calling forward has already happened, in some form, it already exist, it is already available to me, or is already awakening within me.

Why?

Because someday keeps something in the future.

I wish keeps us in wanting.

I hope can keep us waiting.

But I AM brings us into the present.

Instead of:

I will become confident.

Try:

I AM confident in who I am and how I move through the world.

Instead of:

I hope abundance comes into my life.

Try:

I AM open to abundance. I recognize and receive the goodness already flowing through my life.

Instead of:

I want to feel peaceful.

Try:

Peace lives within me. I return to it easily.

There is something powerful about moving from wanting into being.

Now, you’re creating a an energetic opportunity for resonance that will match your declaration with the opportunities and experiences that are in alignment with your declaration!

Your Words Carry Energy

From an esoteric perspective, words can be viewed as more than language. They are expressions of intention.

When we speak them aloud, they also become sound, breath and vibration moving through the body.

Think about the difference between repeatedly telling yourself:

I can't do this. I'm overwhelmed. Nothing ever works out for me.

and consciously declaring:

I AM grounded. I AM supported. I trust myself to meet what is in front of me.

Say each one aloud and notice what happens in your body.

How does your breath respond?

What happens in your chest, your shoulders, your belly?

What emotion rises?

The words may create very different internal experiences.

This is why I believe affirmations become more powerful when we don't just think them.

We speak them.

We hear them.

We feel them.

And eventually, we begin to embody them.

Where Attention Goes, Energy Follows

Whether you view this spiritually, energetically or simply as the power of focused attention, what we repeatedly return our awareness to becomes significant.

An affirmation gives that attention a direction.

It asks:

What am I choosing to strengthen within myself?

Peace?
Trust?
Joy?
Courage?
Love?
Compassion?
Abundance?
Connection?

An affirmation becomes a way of saying:

This is the direction I choose. This is the energy I choose to meet life from.

Not someday.

Today.

Don't Just Say It—Feel It

This is where affirmation becomes something deeper for me.

Place your hand over your heart.

Take a slow breath.

Become present in your body.

Then speak your affirmation aloud as a declaration:

I AM grounded.

Pause.

Feel it.

I AM worthy of receiving love.

Pause.

Feel it.

I AM connected to the wisdom within me.

Pause.

Feel it.

Instead of racing through ten affirmations, choose one or two and allow yourself to experience them.

Ask yourself:

If this were already true within me, what would it feel like?

How would I breathe?

How would I stand?

How would I speak?

What choices would I make?

How would I move through my day?

Now you're not simply repeating words.

You're beginning to practice the vibration of the experience.

Create an Affirmation in Your Own Language

Your affirmation doesn't need to sound poetic, spiritual or profound.

It needs to sound like you.

Begin with something you are ready to call forward and then bring it into the present:

I AM…

I choose…

I trust…

I receive…

I allow…

I know…

I create…

I release…

Maybe yours is:

I AM safe within myself.

I trust the unfolding of my life.

I allow myself to receive.

I AM worthy of rest without earning it.

I release what no longer belongs to me.

I AM connected to my intuition.

I choose peace over pressure.

I AM open to joy.

You Choose!

Your words should feel expansive, but they should also feel like something your inner self can begin to meet.

Affirmation isn't about fighting with yourself.

It is about aligning with yourself.

Make It a Sacred Practice

Your affirmation can become part of your own Sacred Pause.

Light a candle.

Hold a favorite stone.

Place your hands over your heart.

Sit outside.

Journal.
A Morning Practice

Use sound.

Practice Reiki.

Or simply close your eyes and take three conscious breaths.

Then speak your declaration.

Slowly and intentionally.

As though you are reminding yourself of something your deeper self already knows.

No chasing.

No forcing.

Just intention, presence and alignment.

And Then…Drive the Car

Remember our trip to the hardware store?

You can sit in the parking lot of the right store and repeat, Milk, milk, milk all day long, but at some point, you still have to walk through the door.

Affirmation isn't meant to replace action.

It helps give our action direction.

If you declare:

I honor myself.

Notice the next opportunity you have to honor a boundary.

If you declare:

I trust myself.

Notice the next time you have an opportunity to listen to your own knowing.

If you declare:

I AM worthy of rest.

Notice whether you actually allow yourself to rest.

This is where affirmation becomes embodiment.

Thought becomes intention.
Intention becomes declaration.
Declaration shifts direction.
Direction influences action.
And repeated action becomes a way of being.

Perhaps that is the deeper invitation of affirmation.

To become conscious of where we have been directing our energy, and decide whether that is actually where we want to go.

And if it isn't?

Change the destination, get to the right store!

Take a Sacred Pause.

Choose your words.

Speak them as though the energy already exists within you.

Feel them.

Live them.

And begin moving in that direction.

After all, if you're looking for milk…

you have to stop driving to the hardware store.

Reset. Rebalance. Realign.

One breath. One intention. One conscious declaration at a time.

Stay Well,
XO Donna
